They are running around checking on the NT computers. Y2K compliant. We have to stop working for 15 minutes. Not today guys! They also want to check on the Unix systems. Mine is leaving for another department. Let them do it. Leave me alone! They tell us that they will "schedule" our compliance. They will move all our files off. They will change the system. They will load our files back on. The length of time we are "down" depends on the size of the files. I have a 4Gig drive. 3.5Gigs loaded. Uncommon software. Right. PhotoShop, Illustrator, Freehand, DreamWeaver, Flash, Fireworks, FrameMaker, Word (castrated version - no html "I am a browser" idiocy), Excel, Netscape, Adobe Acrobat 4.0. Yep. Nonstandard. Not two years behind in adopting new things. Gee whiz. And we have been told they are "evaluating Office 2000". Lord have Mercy! Office97 was such a disaster. Took three hours on the phone to Microsoft to cripple Word so it was useable. Sort of. Have to do that again! My 200MHz 3400C Mac notebook sits purring between these megaliths. My baby computer. It needs no such help. It's already running Office98. Took 3 minutes to locate and remove the filter that made Word try to emulate a real browser. Easy. No phone call required. I even like the feel of its keyboard better! What idiot decreed that Macs don't belong in the workplace! Look at the trouble a PC causes! Not to mention reducing my productivity by 20%. Easily. And now it brings the unknown and uninitiated into my arena. For that matter, I have an aversion to anyone who assumes that I am a secretary, Y2K worker or no. Nothing wrong with secretaries, pardon me, Administrative Assistants, but I am not one. With an office overflowing with programming and other technical books, writing and publishing guides and a ton of User Manuals for Synthesis software, it is not the office one would see an admin sitting in! No, I don't know what the guys across the hallway are doing. Why would you assume that I do? Not my day to watch them. I hate cubicles. Can't slam a door. Can't lock idiots out. No door to prop open with the useless NT! |
