We all know that Fabio did the Tarzan covers. Why oh why not a Tarzan movie??? That would have been a hit! The new Johnny Weismuller! (The last Tarzan wasn't too shabby - just not quite.) I have been rounding the covers up. I own two. I have scans of the rest. I knew. So here comes Tina to tell me---there are art cards! Of the covers! And who did them! So, of course, I try to buy them. Cheaper than the standups my sons are still rolling their little eyes over. So, of course, they don't answer their phone. And their website has moved. And I can't find them. These people she said had the cards. These things happen. But I am a webmaster! A net baby! Aha! I Yahoo! Sure enough, the artist, Barclay Shaw, has a website (cool). And, sure enough, the man has an e-mail address (real cool). Go for it! I respectfully ask him where I can buy his art cards. I tell him what I am looking for. And why. He responds the next day! I have a new vendor. Bigger. Might stay in business longer. He also tells me that they carry a book, "Electric Dreams". His book. With bigger plates of the Tarzan covers. Speak about loin cloths! Guess what I did? You know me by now! Of course I did. Me and my battered Visa. Here is the reference: A good source for cards is Bud Plant Comic Art at 800-242-6642. He carries my card sets [Barclay Shaw Art Cards]as well as my book "Electric Dreams" which has larger reproductions of the Tarzan paintings. I did indeed use Fabio as a model before he became a monument within popular culture. Had I known at the time of his future fortunes I would have selected someone else, he is an excellent model for illustrators. Don't know why he would have used someone else - but it's nice to know Fabio was a good model. Come to think of it - artists do like their work to shine - not the model they worked from! Of course, we all could have told you that he was a good model! Those of us who have seen him handle hours of a surging crowd. Oh yes. Made my day. Make that UPS and put it on my doorstep baby! I'm ready! |
