Got A G4!

Or, How I Spent Christmas 1999

2000

This is being written on a new keyboard for the G4 - it is as big - about - as the extended keyboard that I love to use.
      It is also color-cordinated.
      Translucent.
      Tilted.
      Lovely.
      Macally ikey is its name.
      Aha.
And Kensington makes a mouse that works USB or AB with a scroll feature.
      Goody.
The UMAX will be learned while I recuperate from the surgery. Beats watching daytime TV. Have you done that lately? Where oh where do they get these nuts?
      Don't answer that!
I watch the same movies over and over.
I have the new mouse plugged in.
I have the 56K modem up and running.
I am surrounded with boxes of software (each must be loaded and registered), 20 Syquest cartridges (must mount the drive and upload eventually).
Two Orb cartridges - must load the 3400C to one and then mount the Orb and upload.
Need to figure out how to "see" the 6Gig backup.
Yes - a lot of this is duplicates - never had the space to put it up and cross compare dates, size, etc.
Probably 6 novels - one of them contemporary and HOT.
      Three technical text books.
Seventeen short stories - science fiction no less.
      A dozen websites.
Lots of PhotoShop scan masters (those never go on-line)
      CLEAN UP. UGH!
      It will take time.
And I now have a new program to learn to help sort the artwork. Only way to stay sane.

The G4 has been on-line all night and at noon, on the 30th of December 1999, it is still running.
      I am downloading.
I am up to the GIFS directory.
Hell-ov'-a-lotta stuff I have sitting on the server at BEST/VARIO - thought it was timely to back it up - as it is up - and then I will run site checking and kill obsolete stuff. Fix links. And clean up.
      Housekeeping.
We women cannot get away from it!
But it is an eye-opener to see how long it takes (with a 56K modem no less). I uploaded with a 14.4K. Over a period of several years.
Take it off the other computer?
One is gone - given away - and I haven't managed to get the new systems to "see" the 6Gig drive. The other computer doesn't have the whole thing. Neither did the older computer. I have killed, moved or renamed or done things. Over four years.
So I need an accurate record.
I think I should have changed memory setting on FETCH - I can't recall if I did or could. It's hard to get used to having nearly 400Mbytes of RAM! And 24GIGs available on the hard drive!
Some of my software can't handle Gigs. Terabytes? A Terra is 1000Gigs which is 1000 Megs. We have a whole new vocabulary now. BIG drives. BIG files. LOTS of storage.
I remember paying $1500 for 40Megs. Now look what you can get.
Of course, I am running bigger software now.
      I have bigger needs.
      Feed the beast!
It will take months to sort this all out!
I may retire before I ever finish!
      Nice thought.
