set-up and mastered the basics of the G4. It has a little glitch. It cannot
be put to sleep. It will crash. It won't wake up. This is an operating system
"feature". If it goes to sleep on its own volition, then it will come back to life on a mouse click (and a slight delay while the drive wakes up). But it won't behave if you use the sleep option on the menu. Then, whap! Type 2 error. No modem. Chaos. This is not very nice. Scared me to death until I remembered hearing something about this. Someone (who had one of the earliest G4s) had brought it in to service and service had mentioned it to me. While I was hunting my G4. And, while my G4 has lots of disk storage space, Claris Home Page will definitely not load. It just can't handle the size of the drive. Another "feature". A different form of what everyone called Y2K. It is amazing to me that, having sounded the alarm and spent $$$ fixing the Y2K bug, the public was disappointed that the bug then did no apparent damage. Excuse me. You fixed it! What a hullabaloo! Now we are examining X2K. I'm not sure what that is. I'll need to recheck MTV. All the other software is coming up just fine. So far. A new SAM (Norton AntiVirus is its new name). With auto updating. Necessary in this day and age of idiots with time on their hands and too much computer training. Prison cannot be too harsh for these people. Some of the new PC viruses are lethal. Damaging. Costly. Enough already. I have DreamWeaver 2 (3 is now out). And Fireworks 2 (3 is now out). And Office98. Of course, I had to hunt down and kill the HTML translator - which allowed Word to pretend that it can be a browser (a bad one). I also killed other web stuff from Office 98. Could we please keep these functions separate? I have Illustrator 7 loaded. Illustrator 8 is on the shelf. I have PhotoShop 4.0 ready to install - and 5.5 on the shelf. Freehand 8 is up and that is the latest. I am hoping to get PageMaker and put it up eventually. I don't currently own it. Nor Quark Express. They are the two page layout programs. I know PageMaker. I will learn QuarkExpress. Eudora and Fetch are happy campers. Today we got a black floppy drive for the G4 (USB connect). Makes taking things off the NT, the 3400 and the G3 easier. Color-coded - it used to be that you bought a system based on its technical specs. CPU speed. RAM. Size of the hard drive. Now we choose them for color. I like the graphite and crystal. I was interested in the grape one. But I read technical specs and the grape one wasn't big enough for me. As a friend of mine says, I like big systems. Big hard drives. Why I like Fabio! But, when the systems have become all "plug and play" (which means that set-up is trivial and you can be on-line and running in 5 minutes after plugging it in. Or less.), then the fashion call works for me. We photographed this beast. Huge. I registered it. I bolted it to the table. Because of break-ins (the post-Christmas rush), I will keep back up. Off-site. The thought of someone taking my new toy is a horrible concept. So, I will finally get new bullets for the gun. (The ones I have can remove a wall.) I am a champion shot. Especially when pissed. In fact, I look so "bad" holding a gun when angry that I've been told I don't need to load it! No one in his or her right mind would argue with me! All this fussing around and I printed out my novel for the reviewers. And I will mail it Wednesday. My surgery is scheduled for Friday. Beat the clock. |
