2005 Story Set
| Date: June 15, 2005 He was a much-desired and much loved baby. His brother had named him before he had arrived. His mother was delighted when he got here. He was cuddled and cared for to the best that could be given while his mother worked to take care of them all. She drove as much as 15 miles on Massachusetts country roads to reach his day care at lunch time, every day. This was to check that he was properly changed, properly fed, and properly cuddled during the day. She got to see the first steps, and to watch the bouncy happy baby greet her. Evenings were centered on the children. If work came home, and it did, it was done after bedtime. Schedules were rigidly maintained so they were never disturbed. Routine was important to children. Work could wait, children cannot. When they moved to San Diego, and he went to a real day-care center, she would ferry him in with his brother in the mornings. She had brightly colored toys, home-made baby food, healthy treats, and diapers, blankets and changes of clothing. She had given up on ever getting to work on time. The children must be properly settled. One day, when Mom arrived with a 2 year old Johnathan cuddled in her arms, two little old ladies talking to the manager of the day car center came over cooing and worried. His brother had already run off to play prior to school. "Oh, look at the poor child!" they cooed. He looked like he had been soundly beaten up. He has these redish bruises on his face. They were all over his dear little head. Unable to help themselves, they came over and reached out to touch his little bruised and smiling face, even while he remained in his mother's arms. The bruises rubbed off. Confused, they looked at the mother. "Lipstick," she said. "I blot my lipstick all over his head so he has kisses all day. It's a game we play. He tries to duck, I get him anyway. If I did not, he would be very upset." |
