2005 Story Set
| Date: December 2, 2005 So --- I called the vet --- like -- I have this dead cat - where do I take it? I was going to just arrive at the vet's but I called instead. I was trapped (and still am) at home waiting for the power company to come check the furnace before I turn it on - and I am freezing cold. (Unusual I know for San Diego but it happens once in awhile. Why I own a few jackets.) The sun was out for a bit - nice - but has now gone away (fog). I am reading huddled under a quilt with the dog and cat refusing to be far from me. I hesitate to leave (the power company will just skip me). But - when the sun came out - it was obvious I needed to do something. With the body. Burying her in the backyard would require a jack-hammer - I live on hard pan - earthquakes must exceed 5.5 for me to notice. Which is handy. Just not today. Besides, this ain't farm country and there are laws. So - the vet's office gave me directions for the County Vet ----- ??? Never heard of that one. By 1:30PM - I decided I had to run (and left a note for the power company) - so I mounted up in the van (where I had placed Little Bit) and drove like a maniac to the County Offices - I had been reading - my eyes were out of focus. Takes about 30 minutes to see clearly. (Old age) Almost missed the 163-15 freeway split. Good instincts and good memory. They were surprised----like, I did not need to go there. The vet should have accepted it. They called the vet-- hey people ----- who promptly said I wanted an autopsy. Nope. Just wanted a place to take her. Said it three times. Know what happened to her. Trauma of capture and relocation. The county vet took her as a one-time favor. I was supposed to call Animal Control. Or something. Nice to know. I thanked them profusely. Back home - there is no sign of the power company (no sorry we missed you). But - it is nearly 4 - they said they will go until MIDNIGHT. Egad! (I got up at 7 to be ready - they run 7AM-12AM?? Yikes. Mail came. That's good. Something is working. And then I looked at the floor of the garage. A box? I had a clear walkway? Aha! This box has Sara's name on it ----- the Truffles had been unceremoniously dumped onto the floor of the open garage. Good thing it is cold. (50s and 60s). Chocolate should not be so mistreated! Not at this time of the month! Especially dark chocolate! Ranger meanwhile flops down on or beside me and sleeps like a zombie. He meows - wants me standing in the kitchen before he eats and sniffed at my tuna sandwich. I must - when freed of house-waiting imprisonment - get litter and canned cat food. Canned dog food. And steel garage side door. With maybe a pet door in it----- The garage door is off its hinges - useless - and I can't leave for another day - a bed frame and a refrigerator are arriving I hope tomorrow. I think I will make noodles (steam heat the kitchen) and indulge in chocolate during a BBCA mystery. (actually - couldn't find it.) While I wait and wait for the power company. In the cold and dark. This is nuts. Of course - sometime soon I also have to figure out how to make the washer and dryer stop wandering around the garage when running. They could walk right out the missing side door. PS: The power company came about 5:30PM. We find the furnace is fine - but the power breakers we blew earlier are on the furnace line. Extension cord? No - we both went to the power panel and reset the damn breakers three times - success. Now if I can just program that stupid programmable thermostat so I don't bake! (I hate those things.) And another item to replace --- right after the electrician. $$$$$ |
