2006 Story Set
| Date: May 2006 Published: Silicon Valley Romance Writer's of America Newsletter May 2006 (Volume 10 Issue48) pg 1, 3 It was one of those end-of-day, Oh-Lord_I-am-tired, last-minute-shopping, drag-through-the-store days. I have only recently gone back to work. My eyes and hands are trying to adjust to intensive reading and typing. I commute 480 miles each way on occasion. My hips have declared war from too much sitting. Most of my shoes, underwear and certainly my clothes reside in my home in San Diego. With my books. So do my dishes, my pots and pans, and my big new refrigerator. I live on Slimfast, eggs and frozen entrees. Chocolate is in there somewhere. I was, in short, bedraggled, depressed, and very, very tired. I had come home in traffic and gone straight to Office Max. I needed security cables. (Two.) Zip disks.(250MB.) And to see if they carried an Iomega hard drive. (No.) They don't carry keyed security locks anymore - only combination ones. After some peevish complaining, my eyes being out of focus from 8 hours at a screen, I got locks with large enough dials that I could see the numbers. Maybe. On a good day. I can always get metal shears and remove the thing if desperate enough. Then I went to Albertson's because sometimes, occasionally, you must get actual food. Even if you don't want to eat it. I stumbled in for salmon. Salad. Coffee. But - you can't drag a writer past a book display. Oh no you can't! And Albertson's on Mowry in Fremont has evidently had a lot of success, because , while they shuffle and move OTHER aisles around, they NEVER move the books. You HAVE to walk in past them. There are always 1-2 of us standing there, examining every title, checking out the backs and fronts of books, grabbing a few lest we, oh horrors of horrors, run out of something to read. Had to look. My eyes crossed, I scanned. I need something. I want to be curled with with it as soon as I get home and put the dog out. Then WHAM! There on the shelf in Albertson's grocery store was the book Sighs Matter By Marianne Stillings ![]() Well, that would jump-start a rhino! Never mind a tired woman who lives alone. I idly wonder about that whole hullabaloo about RT magazine and RWA's magazines needing brown paper wrappers lest little Jonny or Julie get whanged by the sight of a naked male chest. This one certainly qualifies. Very naked. Very male. Great chest. Great ---- well, you know! About eye-level with the little dears riding in Momma's cart. Don't know the author - think she has two chick lit cartoon covers before this (I boycott those covers - I want art!) Do know this has got to be the best darn cover -----and he is in great shape! Neck to thigh and not a stitch (except for a bit of wispy fog----) I have got to read this regardless of the plot! Just to hold the cover!!!! (Of course I did - and I did not bend the cover either! Plot and story OK - not as hot as the cover - but writers can always write their own missing scenes. I do.) That cover certainly put a smile on my face! Oh yes! (Of course - then I went to the Fabio video clips on tasteyoulove and THAT man ripped his shirt off! ON VIDEO! Gasp! Took 8 tries to screen capture that! My hand was shaking! Two gorgeous hunks in a week! Bare chested. Abs. Pecs. Oh Lord!) Now I need a glass of wine. Just to calm down. So I emailed my writing group! Mentioned they need to go get this book! Low and behold, two people know the author. I have to bring the book to the next meeting. (Well, I "forgot".) It isn't leaving my sight. Sits there, facing my computer, all by itself on a shelf. I can check it out in passing. MINE! Anybody know the cover model? Because I'd like to bring HIM to the next meeting! Ho ha! |
