Why the Networks Fail

2007 Story Set

Date: June 13, 2007
I just checked the TV schedule

There is nothing - and I mean nothing - on the main channels worth watching.
      Why am I surprised?

Because all year long there was nothing on the main TV broadcast networks.

There was Blood Ties - oh that was on LifeTime. (Coming back with the 10 episodes of the 22 of season 1 not shown yet)
And The Closer - oh that is on TNT. (Coming back with Season 3 on this coming Monday)

Sopranos - which I DO NOT watch - and that was on HBO and reruns on A&E.

There's the British Mystery programs - on the different PBS, A&E and Biography channels. (Examples: Midsomer Murders, Peroit, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Waking the Dead, Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Jericho, Maigret, (French Detective - set in an earlier time frame - he's now the Dumbeldore of the recent Harry Potter movies.) We are talking 7, 8, 9 seasons of shows trickling over here. I get excited when they have a new one for any of them.

      What's on NBC? CBS? ABC?

CSI? Which they messed up with these dippity-do romance plot lines (Both the original and the CSI Miami version (how many women is Horatio going to go through and why did they cripple the Stud? And make that sleaze ball lose his job? Bring him back? Not in the real world!)
Well, the CSI NY one as well - because she's got this weird face - she was in Meet Joe Black - and drove me nuts in THAT movie so I try not to look at her on CSI New York. Put her in the plot line and you loose me - I may change the channel.
Yes - time to kill Sara off in CSI because a smart man wouldn't have gotten involved at the office in the first place - because he would have been immediately FIRED! And so would she! Cities and counties and States and companies are leery of intra-office romances - even inter-office - because they'd been caught in lawsuits. There are Rules! We all know them! (If we have jobs.) And for heaven's sake put Lady Heather back into Leather! (Dumb scripts! I hate dumb scripts.)

Law & Order - which lost the character I cared about and got silly in its spin-offs - Special Victims had some off the wall stuff and lost my interest; the main show changed characters so many times they lost me. Criminal Intent - I tried - but I kept seeing "Edgar" from Men in Black. I may give up and try again. The "alternate lead" thing is interesting - but someone needs a diet. (Getting a little wide there!).

I tried the line up on CBS on Friday night - and it was painful. Numbers could hold me some of the time. Not always. And not if Mystery was on PBS (i.e, not a non-mystery pledge session). The others were limping. Even when they brought in the JAG lead to resuscitate a weak show (Close to Home). He's cute - the rest put me to sleep.

I see a couple of other summer shows being listed ---- I might look at - also not on the broadcast schedules.
(Da Vinci's Inquest is actually interesting - I watched a lot of the shows while living in San Diego. More non-American TV. There's over 7 season's in the can - we are just getting them.)

And NBC, CBS and ABC wonder why we aren't watching them.

      Pretty simple, really.

Try getting some intelligent shows, 2-hours, real characters (no cookie-cutter straight-haired interchangeable blondes size 2, not everyone in the world is under 35 and and not every man has a six-pak), good plot, people other people might care about, and cut the sex and the profanity and the violence - the British manage to do without it, the Canadians do, the Scottish do, because they have good shows - don't need the trimming.
