Reading for Critique

2007 Story Set

Date: June 30, 2007
If you are one of the victims, er, writers, who are selected to read 10 pages or so of your opus to the ravening crowd at one of our monthly meetings (Silicon Valley Romance Writers of America), here are a few rules.

 1. Post the thing in RTF - because everyone should be able to open and read RTF format (Rich Text Format) regardless of their current word processing package. That's why RTF exists. Not just so WordPerfect people can exchange files with Word people.

 2. Only post the 10 (or however many) pages you are going to actually read - AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE COURIER!!!! DO USE 1" MARGINS! (Staples are actually not a bad idea for the meeting - not for contests.)

 3. Post the thing in PDF - but skip PDF 8 or 8.1: 5, 6 or 7 is fine, 8 and 8.1 are buggy and won't print. And yes, I filed an official bug report with Adobe - I am sure I am one of many irate owners of this piece of crap belatedly designed to cater to Office 2007. (Double ugh!)

 4. Tell people you did that (posted that is)

 5. Remind them of where to find the critique sheet (or - here's a brilliant thought - embed it in your document as a top page). (Use Import file to your file after placing the cursor in the front (or back) of your file selection - or simply cut and paste)

 6. Make copies of both your 10 or so pages and the critique sheet.       Remember to bring them by shoving them in your car, your purse, well, your bra may/may not work because you supposedly take it off at night. Some of you get lucky

 7. Remember to tell someone you are actually coming to the meeting

 8. Remember where the meeting actually is because we move it around often to check on your pre-coffee alertness.

 9. Bring the copies, pens and critique sheets to the actual meeting.

 10. Bring a bottle or can of Starbuck's or soda or whatever so you don't choke up while reading.

Sometime before the meeting, days before, download your own RTF file and read it out loud.

Make note of all the errors you suddenly now see.

      Too late!
