Time for the Victory Garden!

    Where are the calls for Victory gardens to reduce the prices on food and cut off a food stampede?

    Tear up your lawns! Remove "decorative trees"! Plant salad vegetables, beans and corn.

    Grow summer and winter squash. Cucumbers. Tomatoes. Peppers. Carrots. Radishes,Swiss Chard, Sopinach, peas. Teach you kids to grow things and they will eat what they grow. Potatoes and cabbages can also be grown. Get your hans on a Burpees Seed Catalog. Become re-acquainted with steer manure and chicken manure (my favorite).

    Got snails? put a few ducks and chickens into your back yards. Get eggs and bug control, and eventually feathers and stew.

    Put in fruit trees - the ones that grow in your area - into your yards. Add bushes like raspberry and blackberry (they have thornless ones) and blueberries.
Put in a strawberry bed. Flowers and vegetables grow well together. Some flowers help the vegetables by repelling insects. Look into organic gardening.

    No yard? Got a Balcony? I used to grow green beans and carrots in planters. PEople grow herbs in windows. Why pay a fortune for dried spices and herbs? Grow your own. Parseley and swiss chard can grow with petunias right in the flower bed.

    Activate the community garden for people in apartments. Schools sould tear up lawns and get the kids growing things. Like they used to! Have a Farmer's Market to raise funds! Teach practical things. Stop graduating helpess and clueless idiots into a job market that doesn't want them! Get back to the basics.

    Hold community classes.

    Teach sewing so people repair and do not discard their clothing. Fix sheets. Blankets. Darn socks. Make curtains. Fix zippers. re-attach pockets.

    Teach knitting. There are Alpaca yarns around as well as wool and the synthetics. Scarfs, mittens, sweaters, throw blankets.

    Get the crafts up to speed - we need to do this.

    Drum up the recyle business. Outlaw plastic bottles of any kind. (They are floating in an island in the ocean and starving the fish.)

    While you are at it, teach your kids to fish. (Unitl we have none.) You have water? Start a fish farm! You have fields - start up chickens. Turkeys. Ducks. (Wading pools are easy but so are duck ponds.) Got a lot of area? Raise pheasants and grouse.

    We could get back to fattening a hog in the south forty, raising rabbits for meat, digging up potatoes in the wonter - those of us lucky to have a piece of land and access to some water. Even city people can raise rabbits. Your city has laws about rabbits and chickens? Toss them folks out of office and change the laws!

    Oh yeah --- we have gone backward.

    Blame it on the poor education, poor morals, and the greed and avarice that has driven us for 40 years.
