OK - I forgot to turn off mail on the G5 (it grabs my email for sbcglobal). Busy people are easily distracted. Must be the Antibiotics for the two dogs, the ointment for the button tumor on Grace and the oral meds for the ringworm on Suky, and the rabies shot for Summer.
Here comes "QUE" -- a paper sized tablet ---- for displaying books etc. full size --- for techies - hmmmmm. Can I release in PDF?
And after that here come the Apple Tablet --- don't know the size -- or the formats -- yet.
Which eReader? The Amazon Kindle? The Barnes & Noble Nook? The Sony Reader? (The iPhone)
According to cnn.com:
"Toteable "tablet" computers ditch keyboards in favor of touch-screen interfaces. Apple's rumored tablet is getting all of the buzz from tech blogs, but Shapiro said CES will debut tablet computers that run on the Android operating system that Google produces.
Bloggers expect Dell to be among the companies introducing an Android tablet.
Apple's iPhone is the dominant device for using mobile applications. The iTunes app store has sold more than 2 billion apps since it opened in July 2008."
If you are a producer, like me, you are running around going "what format?" and "Can that device take PDF?" (iPhone can)
If you are shopping, like me, you are overwhelmed.
Let's look.
1. Don't need netbooks. I need a MacPro quad (minimum) tower computer with high-res 28-30" display and an PC emulator. This year's tech purchase. First I need to install all the stuff I already have. New OpSys - CS4 on the mac (did the PC already) and get Quark8.
2. I need a new cell phone but I don't need/want all that extra crap! Maybe a new battery and to hell with it! My son threatened me with the Jitterbug. I threatened him with something else.
3. Tablets sound cute - but would I use it? Give up carpel tunnel for a blown shoulder? This wave your hands to search files ---- I am not impressed. Nor am I that organized. Control-F (find on the Mac) is my favorite tool.
4. Which eReader? One my produced stuff would run on. If I want to pub on Kindle - I have to own one. Ditto iPhone. The others? Isn't it time for this to be shook out? PDF should be on ALL OF THEM! It is the tech standard! Then you can play with other "formats". And somebody wake up - we need better laws and enforcement for eBook piracy. Serious fines, penalties, rules for reimbursement and jail time!
5. TV in cars - go to hell! I can see maybe in the BACK SEAT for the brats on trips--- but DVD would have worked on my boys. (And then why drive? When you are trying to show them the country and they are glued to a screen ----- ) Too many people will wreck their cars. Missing TV? Stay home! Use a DVR! I tried a GPS car - distracted the driver way too much!
6. Smart TV. Oximoron. I do not need to check email while crashed on the sofa watching Masterpiece Theater. If I do - I can walk over to the G5 Tower Mac. New year's resolution? Only check email twice a day. Unless trying to generate the SVRWA newsletter. CNN.com and Yahoo have too many pop-ups or in-your-face (forced viewing) ads. Another resolution? Block those sites!
7. 3D TV? I hate 3-D. I didn't see Avatar and I watched Coraline in 2D. Wasn't good at that resolution - why would 3-D be better? I like watching TV while knitting, paying bills, sewing, reading - whenever I have time for those things. Late night TV is a night-light. My glasses are not on my face - why would I want 3-D glasses on top of Trifocals? No thank you.
8. Android Op Sys from Google? Another Op Sys??? Google pirated my books - why would I support them? Why aren't we all going to Linux?
9. Mobile TV. TV isn't good enough to hold my attention when I have 42" and 52" screens! Why would I want a hand-held? I can't even keep my cell phone charged.
