Smell the Flowers

2001

June 18, 2000
Smell the flowers! Take the time!
      Ha!
I see that my lilies (Easter leftovers) have bloomed - all of them - all at once. They've been in the flower boxes and flower pots for a long time. About 5 years.
Because I was always going to move closer to work.
Every year I save the bulbs.
      And get nothing.
This year - they are out in full flower. About a dozen of them
I have no idea what I did but I love it!
The Amaryllis have also bloomed - multiple stems, big blooms.
Also for the first time in ages. Christmas leftovers. Every year I plant the bulbs.
I, after living in this dumpy house for five years, decided to plant things in the front yard. At long last. Because it is obvious that I cannot move to Mountain View (Silicon Valley), unless I decide to sell the house in San Diego as well as this one.
That would cost me a LOT of money (Uncle Sam being greedy) and it would complicate things.
My younger son, soon to be nineteen, is moving to San Diego and will live in my house - along with roommates.
We think he will have roommates.
With what I've spent on the Jettison project I could have paid off the mortgage on that house! And lived in it on weekends!
So, I am resigned. I stay in Fremont with the commute from hell.
Which means, that having reached that momentous decision, I planted flowers.
And squash. And tomatoes. And corn. And onions. And gladiolas. And petunias.
And peppers. And lilies (Calla and Day).
All of a sudden, my dumpy house looks a whole lot better.
I have green tomatoes on the vine.
And baby summer squash on the bush.
And gladiolas are bursting into bloom.
      And the lilies.
And I am about to put seeds into peat pots and try for beans and pumpkins and spaghetti squash.
      And a few sunflowers.
I get to view this magnificence crammed into a tiny front yard as I pull away from the curb in the morning on my way to the freeway and the hellish commute down 880 to 237 - rated by the state to be the worst commute in California.
      Eventually they may fix this.
For now, I hold onto the view of flowers as I sit in fumes.
