Lumbar Punctures and Power Steering

2001

October 20, 2001
My son had a BAD time today - this is the lumbar treatment - all day on Methydrexate and then IV week.
First we tried Adavan - oral - so he wouldn't care if we shoved a needle into his spine.
      Made him silly and loopy
      Like a rag doll.
The lumbar puncture was not successful
      The doctor couldn't get in.
After a bit of retries (five) and some screaming on my son's part (and his clutching of my hips - I hold him in place)
      I stopped it. Enough.
We waited for the first drug to wear off and retried later.
At 3:30 they gave him a MINIMAL dose of Verced - oral - 30 minutes ahead of the procedure.
At one point, he was trying to pee - I had to hold him up.
He couldn't get his pants back on - couldn't stand up long enough.
      He flopped. Out cold.
Three of us held him up for the procedure - the doctor got in that time.
Success - but the patient was out cold. Raggedy Andy doll.
Except that, during the process, he looked to be sure where I was and plopped his head between my breasts.
(He now claims he knew damn weel what he was doing. Sort of.)
I shrugged at the two young doctors helping.
      "Needed contact."
After wards, I shook him alert.
I poured a hot Cappachino Mocha double and a Frapchino into him along with half a big pretzel.
      He slept.
      He slept until about 7PM.
The car turned fine in the parking lot-----I am driving the 87 Toyota van - 13' turning radius.
Beats the truck. Which needs 40 acres.
      So there I am---
      Driving home from the hospital
In the dark of night (almost 9 PM)
      in the van
      and
      suddenly
I realize the steering wheel of the van doesn't move too well-----
Dropped the power steering I would guess
      What fun!
I made it home - takes three men and a boy to turn that sucker
      good thing I work out-----
      - looks like a hydraulic problem because the wheel does turn

PS: It just dropped a cable - just a $200 repair (could have been much, much worse) after having it towed on a flatbed to Toyota. Well, heck. It needed new wiper blades.
