| November 6, 2001 Hilarity at the office------One must have bright moments! I went to work, sore wrists and all, in velvet - because it was cold. Cold enough to run the main furnace without any filters in the furnace - because I didn't need them earlier this spring and I had time, didn't I? Guess I ran out of time. I am in my new boots - the pants boots - black and black velveteen pants and tank and a "Looks like it cost a fortune" fake fur big shirt. Dressed up for getting my truck. Oh why not. So of course, today I needed to get down on all fours and crawl around my work space to find asset numbers and serial numbers for my two computers - the NT and the occasionally-used SUN UNIX workstation. The NT laptop has a security cable. Says a lot that they do not lock up the SUNs. Too big to carry? You can lift them - they look like desk-top PCs. Well, I believed that I needed to power-down and unlock the NT to flip it over and read its numbers. Actually, they are inside the cover, but then, I thought I had to power down and unlock it to open it. My error. But I tried. I have three Kensington lock keys - one for the NT, one for the spare cable, and one for a cable at home but just don't ask me which cable! My Kensington lock failed - I can't unlock the notebook!!! Ooops. The lock stages are turning every which way. It is the correct key according to security records but the lock failed. I am paranoid about keeping the darn thing locked up and in keeping track of my cables. Even when moving offices, I kept the laptop and the carry-case cabled to the desk. I called security. He came over, checked that the keys really did not work, called and got a number, and showed me how to get to the number on the key. Yep. Right key. Well, there is no spare. It's drilling time! They will capture the unit on Wednesday Security will cut the cable, take the whole unit (dock station and CPU) back with them, and drill out the locking hole They will then bring it back with the new cable on it (I had a spare) and hide the key in my desk - it returns on Thursday. Can't have a normal day, can I. |
