2002 Story Set
| July 20, 2002 Ok. It is Saturday. I have been at my new temporary job for one week of a 2-month contract. Hope it goes longer. Hope I can fit in. Meanwhile, I hope I learn to get up at 6AM and leave the house by 7-7:15AM. This requires breakfast and lunch for the kid (and any pills). And a gym bag for me (pack once a week - live out of it for that time.) And my carry-bag since there is no elevator - I must use stairs. Probably why I am tired! Don't need a stair master - the bathroom is down and my office is up! Working on getting a USB zip drive - for the PC at work. And blank zips. Need some anyway - need to get an article to Romantic Times magazine. Today is Saturday and I got up to three loads of laundry, but the dishes were at least under control. I have managed to call the vet about the cat (needs a shot) and taken the dog in for grooming. She is currently snuggled up with my son on his bed. His back hurts. Well of course it does. Thursday was surveillance day for the leukemia in addition to the long chemo day. Your back will hurt if someone drives 5" needles into it a few times! So I, after finding the kitchen floor and counter, or one of them, the hallway (where things magically pile up) and ready to start on the family room or the back yard, whichever catches my fancy, decide that it is time for brownies! I swore that after the date with Fabio I was going to bake brownies. So my son bought the Low-Fat Krusteaz ones. And a big bar of Hershey's Special Dark chocolate. A big bar. 1000 calories. 550 from fat. 10 g of protein. and 110 g carbs. That's for the whole bar. Serves 5. Midgets maybe. See? Women can live on chocolate. Just skip everything else! Actually, while dieting, I usually have a bar in the freezer and I eat 1 square a day during that time of the month when chocolate is necessary for sanity. All righty - now here's what you do. You add the 1/2 cup hot water to the mix and stir (50 strokes max). Use less than 50 strokes. You are saving them. You hand the kid the bar in its wrapper to SMASH! He finally gave up after pounding it on the floor, the wall, and the windowsill. He suggested a hammer. I chopped it with a very large knife. Good thing I work out. When it is in reasonably small pieces (about the size of those LARGE chocolate chips), you pour it all into the brownie mix and stir again. Use a rubber spatula to get it into the pan. Cook at 300. I use Pam on the pan. Lick the bowl and the spatula and the spoon if you used one. Sparingly. It will kill you to get too much. Especially if you use your finger to stir the brownies into a nice level pattern in the pan - allowing yourself the opportunity of scooping up a small chunk of chocolate as you do so. Wash your hands and rinse thoroughly first of course. And after. I was delayed in making brownies because of the chocolate desserts that they sent home from the Breeze. (Restaurant and Bar, Century City, LA) (And which came home in reasonably good shape. I was very careful of them.) All that chocolate had to be SLOWLY savored. And I need to save up to go there again! I may have to go wrangle the entire yard after having one of these brownies. After eating the deserts from the Breeze, I had to go join Gold's Gym! Well, well, well. The brownies are done - about the time I finish weed-whacking the side yard. Something about 4' tall WEEDS that got to me. The brownies, cut into squares when cool enough to do so (but before the chocolate hardens), are served on a small plate. I cut the pan into 12 brownies. My son told me to work on my portion sizes. They are gooey. And rich. And sticky. And sickly sweet. They are delightful. They stick to the roof of your mouth. They coat your teeth. They would put a diabetic into an immediate coma. I am reeling. I need to go work in the yard some more. Work up a sweat. Burn off the sugar. "But they're low fat!" my son yells down the hall at me. (He is bedridden today - I am running around in a bathing suit and old sneakers.) "Not after adding that candy bar!" I holler back. Let's see. 1/16 of a box of low fat brownies is 120 cal, 0 fat. 1/12 of that box with the candy bar added - about 243 cal and 25-30 grams of fat. "I'm evil!" chortles my son, laughing. He is, I agree. I am off to mow the back lawn and hose down the side yard. Physical activity is needed to ward off the fat pill I just consumed. Especially since the pan, still warm, is calling me. And if I succumb I will throw up! Too much sugar! Walking a mile of course is only equal to 100 calories. I am in deep trouble. Low-Fat Lethal Brownies Nutritional Value - 1/12 pan serving: 1920 + 1000 = 2920 /12 calories 110 * 12 / 5 = 45.83 calories from fat 0 + 60 = 60/5 = 12 grams of fat 448 + 110 = 558/12 = 46.5 grams of carbs. 16 + 10 = 26 / 12 = 3 grams of protein 240mg Sodium My son says this is good because instead of the big bar of chocolate being 5 servings - we have extended it to 12 - of course - we had 1 1/2 brownies - so that voids things a bit. Who eats recommended serving sizes anyway! |
