I took my baby (my G4 Minitower) , which is now three
years old (EGAD!), into Computerware, which has reopened
under Elite Computers after going out of business.
Just too many of us Apple Geeks
around to keep that store down!
And----
It had a few problems.
And nine more days under warrenty. Tra la.
First, the drive hadn't respun on restart. It only
takes once to mean you have an intermittent drive failure.
Second, it was noisy. He said right away - "the
fan on the video card---"
Third, I was concerned about the power supply, so
he's checking that too. Besides, it's what the Apple Care
people had sent me running in to check in the first place. Guess I should
haul the monitor in.
It flickers.
If I can lift it.
Takes three men and a boy.
If I was working full time permanent instead of contracting
day to day, I would get that new wide digital monitor.
But --- I can wait.
Maybe they'll make an even bigger one!
Must save my eyes!
$125 for expedite the repair. (Oh Yes)
And $125 to back up the drive. (Oh yes)
So I bought an 80 GIG firewire drive. (Under $300.)
"Here. Back up on this." La Cie. Firewire.
Good.
Like I always say, I like big, hard drives.
If you're going to do it - do it right!
I was going to get the 80Gig drive anyway. (Or a
120Gig - but that seems too big. That would be a messy crash!)
Because I can't convert to OpSys 10.2 (Jaguar) unless
I am really fully backed up.
And I have the old DVD system.
(The disks are in cartridges.
Which I can now take them out of when I get my new
system.
Or so they tell me.)
I have backed up my "data" on DVD.
And even on "ZIP".
Noting that zips are moving to 750MHz now and have
taken over the Jaz drive arena.
Ane the Syquest. And the Orb.
I have all this stuff hanging around the house.
I will not need to buy a new computer for a bit (good!)
This is good since I can now plan on the way, way
overdue camper shell and bedliner for the Tacoma pickup
truck.
Must keep up with the toys.
Feed me. Feed me.
