2002 Story Set
| September 1, 2002 I am off my diet because I have been too busy to reorder Medifast. So Tuesday, it is on my list of things to do. Along with the find the YTD from Synopsys (a phone call?) And file (or find out how to file) workman's comp claim against Synopsys. Carpel Tunnel is confirmed and I will need surgery eventually. Monday I must take a call from EDD (unemployment). Something they want to know? They are confused because I make more money per week that you can write on the form. I am not actively looking for work (keeping an eye on it - it isn't there). If I want to do this full time (as a normal worker with benefits) here at this company, which I would like, then there is little sense to look elsewhere at the moment. Not for fulltime work. I don't know if I shall stay after Sept 15th. The work goes on, so I think so but the world of the contractor is uncertain. I signed a 2-month contract. But no one has spoken as we race from deadline to deadline. And they can give notice in three days, not two weeks. If I am not to stay here (at least through Christmas), I will have to hurry to get established as a tech writer with every agency I can find. A time-consuming proposition. But my work partner has been doing contract-only - turning down full time jobs - for years. And likes it. He's been giving me pointers. And selling me on the lifestyle. Tired of the people? Leave! Tired period? Leave! Fine when there is no recession, Now - not so fine. 20 people per job (or one per agency for every agency they deal with) get interviewed for one job, although he tells me I am at the high-end of skills. That's comforting to know. I had planned to do the contractor bit starting sometime soon. Just started early. Because I want to be able to take weeks off to work on my own projects. They get back-burnered so fast when I work a full day and then add on two hours of commute. Even worse with the kid in the hospital. Later on, I want to work three months on - and then one off. That would let me write, write, write. For now, I just want to make the mortgage and pay my property taxes. Oh yes. And keep COBRA running. I don't qualify for Medicare just yet! Four years, four months and counting down. Then my insurance will be all over the map. I will cross that bridge later. I find everything is done now looking at months left to work. Not past 70, surely. So I have 9 years, 4 months and 11 days until I can collect Social Security. Note that soon it will be 8 years and x months, and then 7 years, and then 6 years........ I am in life countdown. I wonder if I will be thin by then. |
