Incarceration

2002 Story Set

September 12, 2002
Thursday was supposed to be chemo day. But, of course, my son was still in the hospital.
For X-rays, we make a parade. Two nurses and I for I man the wheelchair. One nurse for the IV pole. One nurse for the Oxygen tank. And my son holds the pulse monitor.
Last night, they left his IV active and one nurse did the chore with me as we went down to CT for a scan.
He was coughing himself silly. He was breathing hard.
And then we had to lay him on the CT bed and put his arms over his head.
He actually SAT'd better (O2 in the blood stream) with his arms over his head.
It took a bit but we got the scan done and got him back up and settled.
Yesterday he was running fevers all day.
The fever curve, I understand, is improving.
The CT is done to see if the fungus has reappeared, because he would be impossible if kept in the hospital for weeks for Amphoterisin. The drug from hell.
      So far, so good.
He chills, and I rush to wrap him in blankets.
He has Tylenol and a limited amount of Motrin.
When the fever comes down, he tosses all the covers aside.
Yesterday I brought a huge McDonald's super-sized vanilla shake. He had it all.
Today, I slept until 10AM and then did errands until I came in around noon.
I brought dishes and was prepared to make anything.
Tuna sandwich or spaghetti, soup or cheese and crackers.
He was chilled when I got in. I pushed soda down him sand then Tylenol.
He had an X-ray. He was hep-locked for this one.
Transport was prepared to push the chair.
No, that's my job when I am here.
I also help with the X-ray drape.
I change his shirt when he is back in his room.
I fix a can of hearty chicken and rise soup.
      He eats 2/3rds of it.
I make a slurpy of Code Red Mountain Dew and sherbet.
      He likes Sorbet too.
He sucks a Tootsie Roll pop.
      His coughing is less.
I work on typing on a make-shift computer stand,
My G3 is doing hospital duty at present since its running OpSys 9.1 and Office 2001.
I have nothing else installed on it so far. In fact, Flash needs to be reinstalled.
Upgrading an OS messes up programs.
Its battery is also stone-cold dead. Won't recharge and tells me that the "Left bay is empty". On thanks. That's about $100.
But then, I also need to get the AC cord swapped out (on recall).
I also need to get my nails redone - its been nearly 4 weeks.
They are too long and hard to use. I mistype, often.
He is crabby. Cranky. Disgruntled. Wants out.
I need him home so I can plan the party.
      This is not fun!!!
One minute I am fixing food. Next minute I am being snapped at.
The mood swings are up and down. (He dropped 30+ pounds.)
      I am tired.
I have finished typing the update to SilverC User's Guide, the FAQ and the "secret" notes document - things to decide, develop, etc.
I am cross-eyed - 137 changes to sort out and other fixes.
      Ready for work tomorrow.
I think tomorrow I will add software to the G3.
I may also think about out to get data from it to the G4 tower.
The G3 is SCSI and the tower is Firewire and USB.
      I think my G3 can't upgrade to System 10. What a pain.
Maybe Momma needs a G4 Titanium laptop------.
After I figure out where I will be working after this contract is up.
