Wild in the Grocery Store

2002 Story Set

Date: November 24, 2002
I went Thanksgiving shopping today, and I managed to break my own record.
      Over $400!
      Yea gads!
      What did I buy?
Besides taking my son along, and needing two carts-----
First of all, four super-sized stuffed chenille soft cuddly things – three bears and one iguana.
The green iguana and the red bear are going to the hospital.
      The purple bear is mine.
And the blue one is my son’s.
The green iguana is for Clinic D – and is about 3 feet long. Adorable.
The red bear is bigger than most children
      These go in after Thanksgiving.
I got myself two lavender candles. Burning brightly.
And there was a turkey – Nearly $28 – for a Butterball. No deal this year.
      It’s fresh – not frozen.
It’s small enough to fit in the fridge.
      How unique.
      Is my older son coming?
Is my ex-husband coming with him?
      I have no idea.
Blue Pepsi ended up in the cart when I wasn’t looking – not on sale. While I opted for on-sale Bargg’s Root Beer – diet.
Three dozen eggs – one of them the Omega3 eggs.
Two pounds of butter and a tub of Smart Balance. And a smaller one of Total Control (spreads easy).
Two boxes of brown sugar – and discovered I had two more at home.
I had bought the pumpkin stuff (mix and pumpkin) earlier.
I got Portobello mushroom pieces for the stuffing. Bits and pieces as well as a canned of sliced.
And water chestnuts (sliced) and bamboo shoots.
Add one thing of Jimmy Dean sausage – Hot since I couldn’t find regular.
A celery package and a carrot package also for the stuffing.
And an Elephant garlic bulb or two. I have regular ones at home.
A box if stuffing mix – not needed – I have three at home. Christmas is taken care of.
One 1/2 gal. Of milk. And a can of Reddi Whip.
A Bryer’s French Vanilla tub. For the pumpkin and the apple pies.
And then an on-sale 1/2 gal of Dryer’s Light Chocolate Mouse.
wo pizza’s – Digornio’s – so I don’t cook during the week leading up to Thanksgiving.
Three cans of soup – hearty. They are nearly $3 each!
A small can of Mandarin oranges. I had a bigger can at home.
Cranberry sauce – the jellied kind.
      A bottle of jam.
      A bottle of honey.
He wanted Little Smokies. A big sack of them. Not the little package.
      I have whiskey at home.
We got a bottle of barbecue just for them – add ketchup and whiskey and simmer.
Some chopped onion. He got white onions. I bought a yellow. And a touch of mustard. I have a big jar of that at home.
Now I need to find the crock-pot.
I got green apples – if my older son comes he wants Mom’s apple pie. (He'd better return my pie plates or it gets this one in a box!)
I got a bottle of mince. I used to make a mince pie.
Nonesuch dry mix. 2 Cups of raisins. Use Cider and port wine for liquid, cook down. Add walnuts.
Put into a 10” deep dish pie pan – two crusts because mince is strong.
But now – I just have a spoonful out of the jar when I want it.
I bought a new refrigerator – when my son was ostensibly leaving home.
      It is 22 cu feet.
Since he never left, I have regretted it ever since. I should have a 26 cu ft unit!
And I sold off the spare freezer! Dumb!
I got Vogue and Sunset, and he got PC Games.
We each got a fast soda to have in the car. He got chips. I added hot sauce.
I got him pop-corn to pop of an afternoon.
I got nuts – in bags no less – walnuts, almonds, filberts and Brazil nuts. No loose bins!
I added bagels and sourdough bread.
And yeast for my home-made Thanksgiving morning bread. And a 5 lb. Bag of flour for the bread and pie crust.
I had a box of fat-free brownie mix – and, you guessed it, he added FOUR giant bars of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate. (Only one is for the brownie mix.)
Bottles of water for him (flavored) – only four – he should have picked up eight.
      And V8Splash. A few 1/2 gallons.
And my Lite mocha Starbuck’s coffee.
Pickles. Sweet and dill. I have olives.
      Foil – Reynolds’s aluminum heavy-duty wide foil. And a toss-away roaster base.
Six bottles of Martinelli’s sparkling cider (when did this become so common – we used to make due with one bottle and a cheaper jug of cider).
      Some paper towels.
Some frozen food containers. Like I don’t have enough.
      A bag of cat food.
Coffee and coffee mix (2 for) decaf and French-vanilla.
A big serving platter – plastic. I don’t really need. We can skip the serving dish.         And a big spoon. I've been breaking mine on hard ice cream.
There large russet baking potatoes and three equally large yams. I like yams – he eats potatoes.
      A sack of chestnuts.
No fireplace – but we can build a bonfire outside.
One Pasta Anytime so he can eat when I drag him to work Tuesday after chemo.
      I can’t take a 3-day pay loss.
Contract people don’t get paid holidays.
A knife sharpener since I can’t find my old one. It’s 30-years old anyway.
Some frozen blackberries. And some pre-made – old fashioned tapioca. (I like it. It helps settle the stomach. After this bill, I‘ll need it.)
Some hair dye – my roots are showing. I just cropped my hair off. Well, a little off. It was clumping.
I found the Classico Portobello Mushroom spaghetti sauce. I got two bottles. Don't need them right away anyway.
And a couple low carb high-protein bars.
I saved $64.47 and did bonus buys for 4.02.
      145 items.
      $443.34.
They had to call for an override.
      I need an aspirin.
I’m glad I am still working.
      I’m glad I am fairly well-paid.
It took 35 minutes for me to carry it all in.
I didn’t need the treadmill or the gym!
I was flexing all my muscles.
      My son is so spoiled!
But he’s here to spoil. And I am working. So we carry on.
I have no idea how many are coming to dinner.
I will have a lot of leftovers. Or less.
The mushrooms will make the stuffing a meal by itself.
      Oh God!
      I have to make gravy!
Better check the Bamix. I'll whip it into submission.
