Some Days -------

2002 Story Set

Date: November 25, 2002

Some days it does not pay to get up ----
Or --- The Wednesday before Thanksgiving (sort of like the Night Before Christmas?)
But I did get up - and decided (having overslept) that I would bloody well watch 30 minutes of Ground Force (BBC America) over coffee. If Alan is leaving the show in a year - I don't want to miss him! Or Tommy. Or Charlie.
And the take off (of my day)------
My son banged on the wall (his headboard backs up to my closet) and I put a dressing on his back for the RingWorm (fungus infection).
I left him cooked eggs and two dishes of pills (breakfast - lunch) and soup - I will bake pies tonight.
We did chemo yesterday in the morning - like a yo-yo in and out of the waiting room all day. They were backed up to keep people away on Thursday (Thanksgiving). I was so glad I had the van!
And then after that a dead run to my office since I had a 2:30 meeting - that ran to 4, and then I was in another meeting 'til after 6PM. My son had to come along to my office so he brought his computer and PEARL books - he's trying to learn to program. We logged him as part of White Enterprises.
We got home by 7:30 - and did microwave dinner.
He had been treated to Togo's for lunch on the fly. Te new 350 calories dinner Healthy Choice and Lean Cusine seem to be OK.
So had I. Had Togo's for lunch. Bad mommy!
This morning, the day after chemo and the day before Thanksgiving, I needed gas for the truck - and had finally remembered that it was time to pay the Visa bill - that was the nagging thing I had forgotten to do when I mailed COBRA. Tch Tch - I am slipping.
The bank opens at 9AM (drat - 8:30 would be more convenient) and so I went for gas and back to wait. (They are just across the street from each other and near the freeway).
I reached for my checkbook ------ and it was not there. You know how your stomach clenches when there is pending disaster? I nearly lost my pills and coffee.
A quick (and frantic) search of my purse and bag showed it missing in action.
So--- I went back home! Fuming.
Behind contractors tooling along to their jobs with coffee and donut in hand (they are never fast in the morning - ever noticed?)
And--- Found the bugger! - dropped inside the hospital bag.
Why I even searched there after a quick glance at my computer desk I don't know since we hadn't used it yesterday to go to the hospital. It's my - drag-everything-along bag for long chemo days. Yesterday was a short chemo day (only 4 hours.)
      But --- there it was.
So back to the bank, which is now open (9:05). And I pay off Visa and get $200.
I remembered Visa when I got to the hospital yesterday and counted out money for coffee there and at Togo's later - and discovered that I was out of $20.
I seem to burn through them - oh yes - there was that day at the hospital with the lab mistake - burned thru about $80 worth of $20 - I have change everywhere.
      I check my balance.
      $4,400???? After three deposits???
Something is not right - so ---- I get a check today or Monday ---- and need to add up checks I wrote.
I should have about double that.
What have I been doing? Tch Tch. Good question.
Well, putting deposits in the other account for one thing.
Guess I'd better swing one (or part of it) back.
I do put things into the other account. On account of I need to pay income taxes shortly. Every three months. They do that so you don't owe as much in April. Called estimated something.
Recovered - ha ha - I finally hit the road for work.
The freeway was clear - I was driving in fifth gear all the way in.
      Not too shabby!
What a start to my morning!
      The day before Thankgiving!
The saga continued when I got to the gym. I had gone earlier than usual since I have a meeting at 1:30. I went at 12 noon straight up, 10 minutes after drinking 16 oz of soy Revival mix. Because I forgot to drink it earlier.
That was the first thing. (Never drink that much and then go walking----women shouldn't anyway.) I had visions of me running the length of the gym whenever my bloadder declared war. Having had two boys, my bladder is not well-behaved. Birthing does that to women.
It was followed by the immediate discovery that those socks I had picked up loose in the truck and tossed in the wash pile were my gym socks, and were merrily sitting in the dryer at home, 35 miles away.
And then I thought that I maybe did not have my Gatorade. The final insult. I grabed a hlaf-ddrunk bottle of water. Grrrr.
On going in to the locker room, I found my Gatorade bottle, dumped it (residue) and opened a fresh one I found in the bottom of the bag. Good thinking!
I used anti-perspirant on my feet and used my shoes without socks.
      It worked just fine.
      I did a 1-hour work out.
And then rushed back - and made the meeting where I sipped the daily coffee (bottle Starbuck's Lite Moca).
I got my check - which I need because my checking account is running on low tide - but I can't deposit it until Friday.
      Oh, I'll be up early!
After typing myself silly, I left early, after assuring my boss that I would decipher that diagram from the previous day's meeting on Monday bright and early. I was typing something else frantically.
      It is pie night.
I will, for once, make the pies early. (I did.)
And get the turkey in the oven right after the bread in the morning. (Noon - three hour stuffing.)
Leaving work at 4PM is early on a holiday you might think - but in Silicon Valley it is not early enough.
I sit in horrendous traffic for an hour.
According to the traffic reports - there are accidents everywhere - and I see a whole bunch of them - and everywhere is backed up as people try to flee town.
I am careful - I don't want to be one of them.
It's frozen pizza tonight baby! (The pizza was fine on second cooking - after nearly burning the pumpkin pie when I turned up the oven to heat up the pizza - ooops. That would have capped the day!)
      I need this holiday.
I have so much work to do------
