2002 Story Set
| September 30, 2002 I got up early and fled - left the kid to his own devices and ran to the Toyota service center. This means that the boy had to make breakfast and lunch. All by his little self. I had dutifully warned him the night before. On the way by 7:10AM - I saw that I had broken a nail Can't think of when - the other one came off with the sound of a gun This one was quiet The "1 hour service - 8600 miles" on the Tacoma - took about 3 hours - me on a hard chair. "Mike" had warned me that the people I had compared to talking to stones when I saw them last Thursday would be there tomorrow so we moved the van to Wednesday when he would be there. Good warning! They are young, very, and I am not in the mood. As I waited, I read my book - an almagum of mystery writers had teamed up. It is surprisingly gruesome (I got 75% thru and then I read the end and am now skimming the rest - too much for me). After the 3 hours (about 10AM) I am ansy and they tell me 30 more minutes - the weather strip clips (missing from the truck) are in stock. 45 minutes later they had it ready and I was right behind the paperwork as it came to the counter. After the cashier hacked and coughed and wiped her running nose on her hand - lovely to watch and touched my papers - Momma will need a shower - I was on the road after stalling the truck at least once. I ran down 85 - I usually drive 101 - and managed to find Bernal and get to the office. There was a moment when I thought I had missed he exit and headed for LA. It is cool (cooler than it has been) and the smoke is gone (at least I can't smell the fire). I had sussed the fact that I left the house without my asthma treatment earlier - I do have the emergency inhaler - and the stairs will be fun. The office has no elevator---- After typing for awhile - at lunchtime I submitted two entries to a writing contest. They had stamps for sale at work and a scale - but I needed to drive them to a pickup box - down the street- and near Starbuck's so I got a cafe mocha since I was there - on the "since you was up get me a beer" principle. This Starbuck's needs to train their staff better - they are all cheeky. Of course, they open at 5AM. On the way back - I - and a woman in an SUV coming the other way - nearly broad sided a man backing up fast without looking - right in front of me and her We exchanged looks - she and I - I made a hand signal like "what an idiot" - she was shaking her head - two strangers in accord. The twit had merrily driven off - either one of us could have killed him - we have bigger cars. I also noted a very large Ford raised wheels big truck pulling in driven by a blond of a certain age. I laughed all the way back to work. The men are not buying the trucks - the WOMAN are! The men are in little cars and still stupid. I had submitted two entries to the contest - one regency (Merry Christmas, Molly!) and one contemporary (Passage). 15 pages each - Passage was a stretch - added a title page and still barely made it! Molly had to be clipped! I had fixed them up last night. I typed some more and began searching for inputs. These docs are overdue. I left at 5:10 and made it up to the nail place by 6:10 - which meant I got home at 7:10PM. The kid - had eaten all the grapes, some chips, and a Lean Pocket. He had avoided all the good stuff like oatmeal and sandwich stuff. I made us both ham sandwiches (stuffed with cheese, ham and lettuce) and then he had a Healthy Choice Bowl of something. I had a little Tapioca - I found Old Fashioned (large tapiocas) pudding at Albertson's and I like it. I snoozed for a bit because I was beat. I taped "Waking the Dead" on BBC America and watched CSI Miami on CBS with the boy after making him popcorn. Waking the Dead is a British CSI 2-hour episode movie - love BBC.
