Trip to the Apple Store

2003 Story Set

Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2003
Well - we went to the Apple Store to get my younger son Panther (the new Apple OS) so my son could do his C++ homework on his G4 tower (or G4 laptop) - he has them chained together.
      OOOOPS!
Momma loose in the Apple store direct from the hospital visit !
(And how do you feel about knowing you are probably going to die??? What a question to ask my kid in front of me!)
And the G4 musta crashed on me once too often!!!! Like 4 times that morning.
I was in a buying mood.
      I get moody like that.
Withdrawal for four months sets me off.
So I looked. Hmmmm. Toys. New stuff.
      Pretty!
No - the 26" flat screen in too big and the 23" is a tad up there in $$$ --- the 17" is small - but the 20" seems to be just right.
Laptop? I looked. They are still G4s.
I looked at iBook. Too small.
I scanned all over the place.
      I pondered.
My son, ever wise, said, after I was complaining about the choices and confused, "You know you always get top of the line. Go for it!" as he went off for his own toys. He has money. And he has me in tow. That's for overflow.
So we rounded up a saleman (they seem to be more intelligent since our last visit to the store) and asked questions.
There is a new dual-processor 1.8 GHz system - just about $300 less than the dual processor 2GHz system - when the student discount is examined. You see, I have my son and his college ID in tow.
      Hmmmmm.
      OK guy.
      I want ----
      Wait for it -------
------ Dual processor 2Gig G5 Tower system with 1 GIG RAM, a 20" screen, and a different mouse (cute white mouse doesn't "feel" right). We shall see.
And software upgrades. Photoshop. Illustrator. A new Word-Office package. Dreamweaver. Flash. Skip Fireworks - never learned it. Waste of time. Acrobat 6 upgrade.
Just under $7,000 (from my retirement account). I pay for my toys.
iPOD stuff. He pays for his.
A turning knob (scrolling tool for big docs).
DVD blanks. I believe in back up.
He got a book, some speakers.
      We have USB Hubs.
I will need to find split keyboards. Ergometrics.
And a firewire cable to hook up the G4 as a "target". This is priceless!
I can upgrade without loading the old software onto the new machine!
I think! (Turns out - no - lucky me - I hadn't hooked up yet.)
The old stuff becomes archival data for when I need to reinstall the new ones (Once in awhile I have needed to do that and spent hours on the phone with the software companies. "It can't see itself!")
      Three bags full.
A hour wait for the memory test (system came with 1/2 Gig - I added RAM.)
Three bags of stuff - knobs, mice --- bendy lights
      EGADS!!!!
XMAS CAME EARLY - (We will put empty boxes under the tree)
I took a shot - of my son - with HIS stuff in a sack slung over his back - he posed running to his room. Modern Santa.
      Happy as a clam.
      Why not?
You only live once - as had been drilled into our heads lately.
Someone I know wants to go shopping with me.
      She wants to watch.
Wonder Woman with a credit card! Super Shopper!
