Whoops - Charred Appple Pie

2003 Story Set

Date: December 24, 2003
      KNEW I was too tired
First I tried a batch of pie crust - UGH!
3 crusts at once - did not work - never does - I KNEW that - pie crust is tricky!
But I patched the pie together anyway. Who will know?
The pumpkin pie went in and out of the oven and was fine.
By now it was 8 PM.
I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ---- by 9, I discovered the apple pie sitting in a cold oven
      - I had turned it off to turn it up in temp and forgotten to restart it. I HATE DIGITAL CONTROLS!
All this time waiting and barely awake!
My son had helped me peel and core the apples.
      I was dragging.
I turned on the oven - set the timer - and went to bed to curl up and watch a show.
He had told me to lay down. He did not know I still had a pie in the oven. He didn't hear me wail.
I have been standing or moving all day long.
I passed out I guess - 1 hour and 40 minutes later - right thru the buzzer - the scrap pie was burned black (the little leftover pie).
It broke the glass pan (one of my 10" pie pans).
And the regular pie was about charred as well (400 degrees).
It is 10:30 PM - where in heavens name do I go for apples???
      I am furious!
So I went to get the dog in - after cutting the edges off the pie and scooping out a piece.
yep - tastes burned even with the black scraped off - yuck.
I tripped on the heating pad in the third bedroom (we put her in via the garage when its wet).
And then got my night gown wet when I struggled to open the recalcitrant gate.
I am ready to strangle something!!
We have apples - just not the $4.00 premium Granny Smith apples
I never got a piece of the Thanksgiving apple pie - just a bite - and it was fabulous.
I was trying to duplicate that but I was simply too tired.
I am now simply too mad!
The deep-dish pumpkin pie came out fab - the scrap pie (the leftovers) tasted great .
But my older son loves apple pie!
My younger son sent me to bed. Firmly. Before I fell apart.
      Tomorrow is another day.
