2003 Story Set
| Date: December 25, 2003 The guts of the charred pie were very good ------ Just peel back that top crust after cooling ---- I would make a second pie The turkey was --- FROZEN at 8AM - we floated it in the sink. First - early morning (8:15AM) We got and up drove around looking for a store. Long's would open at 10AM. They have canned apple pie filling. I became fixated - we MUST shop on Christmas! Never done that! I came home and started an apple pie. My older son arrived I had him pulling out the neck and the plastic bag broke (frozen inside) so he had to put his hand in. That sparked a few comments. We rinsed it with hot salt and water. (But it was definitely frozen when I later stuffed it.) And the boys ---- got into the big LEGO set - Star Wars walker. My younger son did peel apples. I sliced and made a new batch of pie crust - it came out great! I made a second apple pie - the crust flaky and crispy (the leftover piece was) FAB!!!! At 10:30AM we trouped to Longs --- and SHOPPED!!! I got bourbon. I had FORGOTTEN ELEPHANT GARLIC. They of course did not have any. I used Watkins liquid garlic in the stuffing - corn bread this time. The boys decorated the gingerbread ladies - which have remained relatively intact surprisingly. (Although now, a few days later, my son tells me they look like a triage room at a hospital - all broken and headless.) By 12:30 I had the bird stuffed It's 7:30 PM - and the turkey is pink inside (I tested it) so back into the oven it goes I also baked an instant read thermometer - I hadn't meant to leave it long ---- It was cooked!!! Melted!!! Almost was a disaster --- serves them right - I had sat down and my older son had pinned me down with his legs. My excuse. Fortunately we got it before it exploded all over the turkey. And we got the Champagne -cum sparkling wine out of the freezer before it went . We have the table set - the potatoes and gravy ready. The other foods in dishes (cold artichoke hearts, pickles, cranberry sauce, potatoes, olives, and two pies). So we wait - So we will just wait another hour ----- And eat from the edges. (It worked - and was perfect!) They have plundered their way thru the presents --- my older son hates his sweater so I'll exchange it for one for my other one. I have been told not to buy clothes for a gay guy. He loved the candles and bath stuff and the electronics - a 256 MB USB thumb drive and a copy of Photoshop and the chess set. He bitched about the socks!!!! (Hey - they go inside boots!) He kept the second shirt --- but doesn't love it - my younger son has the same style - other colors and looks fab in them - go with his different jackets. They are very different dressers. We are going mall-hopping tomorrow My older son will stay overnight Should be fun - Stoneridge Mall - BIG mall - we like to wander around in it. I need a replacement pie plate--------. But that second apple pie was delicious! I got a piece before I sent it home. I had the other one's guts after all. |
